Arqueologia e Antropologia Polar no Brasil - Polar Archaeology and Anthropology in Brazil

Antropologia e arqueologia polar são temáticas novas dentro das pesquisas científicas contemporâneas. Porem os resultados alcançados até o momento evidenciam o grande potencial dessas problemáticas na compreensão de diversos aspectos culturais no presente e na histórica das regiões polares.
Tendo em vista que Brasil iniciou recentemente atividades nesta área, acreditamos que um encontro com os principais especialistas do assunto seria uma forma de consolidar e dar visibilidade à arqueologia e antropologia brasileira.
UFMG, em conjunto com outras intituições brasileiras (USP, UnB) montou uma equipe multidisciplinar que tem se dedicado ao desenvolvimento de projetos de antropologia e arqueologia Antártica. O Projeto denominado “Paisagens em Branco: arqueologia histórica Antartica” dirigido pelos professores Andrés Zarankin e Carlos Magno Guimarães conta com financiamento do Cnpq. Atualmente está sendo constituído um laboratório de estudos em Ciências Humanas Polares para a análise dos materiais de dados coletados em campo. Além do mais é importante ressaltar que a UFMG tem criado um curso de graduação em Antropologia e Arqueologia e conta com mestrado (e partir de 2012 um doutorado na área), o que permitirá a formação de recursos humanos especializados na temática. Assim, acreditamos que tanto o local quanto o momento de realização do Evento são ideais e com expectativas de excelentes resultados.

Polar anthropology and archaeology are new areas within contemporary scientific research. However, the results achieved so far clearly show that studying these themes presents great potential for investigating many cultural aspects of the present, as well details of the history of polar regions.
Considering that Brazil only recently initiated polar research on human sciences, we believe that a meeting with the main specialists in the areas of polar archaeology and anthropology would consolidate and give greater visibility to Brazil’s contribution to these studies.
UFMG (Federal University of Minas Gerais), alongside other Brazilian institutions, such as USP (University of São Paulo) and UnB (University of Brasília) have put together a multidisciplinary team that have been dedicated to the development of anthropological and archaeological projects in the Antarctic. The project Paisagens em branco: arqueologia histórica antártica (White landscapes: Antarctic historical archaeology) is directed by the UFMG professors Andrés Zarankin and Carlos Magno Guimarães and is financed by Cnpq. Under their direction, a human sciences laboratory is presently being put together, which will specialise in studies of the polar regions and provide space for the analysis of materials and data collected in the field. UFMG has recently initiated a graduation course in anthropology and archaeology and also offers a course on those subjects at master’s degree level. Furthermore, a doctorate degree will be opening in 2012, and this will allow further training for personal specialized in polar themes. Therefore, we believe that both the timing and the local for offering this event are ideal, and we expect excellent results.
